Tips for Camping in the Snow
There are a lot of people who would like to avoid camping during winter season because they believe that it can be more stressful for them. There are some who would choose to rent a cabin wherein there is enough heat but some people would like to challenge themselves during the winter time. They would like to grab some of their belongings and try to find a remote location wherein they can start camping. Nobody said it would be easy to camp during winter but there are some who actually prefer it.
If you would try camping during winter then you would need some of these tips so that you can survive well:
1. Look for fire resistant materials that are available.
There are a lot of fire resistant materials that you are going to bring with you when you go camping during winter. One of these fire resistant materials is wool. You know that even if you are exposed to fire, it will not catch. If you are cooking, this will not be an issue even if you get struck by some of the ember.
2. Use a pee bottle.
There is a big possibility that because of the cold weather, you will find the need to urinate more frequently than before. It will be hard to go out of the house that you have created because of the cold weather. It may seem embarrassing for you in the beginning but you will get used to it. It does not matter whether you are male or female. There are different pee bottles that are available depending on your needs.
3. Choose the right sleeping pad.
You know that it is going to be colder for you especially during nighttime so you need to make sure that you will pay attention to your sleeping pad. When you are sleeping, you lose more body heat. This explains why you become more comfortable even when it is hot while you are sleeping. When the weather is cold, there is a big chance that you will lose even more body heat than usual. Sometimes you are required to have more than one sleeping pad but if you only have one, you can add some of your clothes to the pad to become hotter while you are sleeping.
4. Always pack extra clothes.
There are instances when you would need to go out of your house from time to time so you will be required to pack the clothes that you need. You need to have mittens and even gloves so that whenever you go out, you will have the things that you need. Due to the bitter weather, there is a big chance that you would lose some of the items that you have. The extra clothes will lessen the chances that you will get frostbitten especially when you are doing some of your camping errands.
5. Boil snow for water.
Do you think that you should bring your water filtration system while you are camping? You know that you should not do this especially when you have the chance to boil snow. The best thing about this is that snow is actually clean. You do not have to go through a lot of effort anymore into having a mechanical or chemical system.
6. Pack the snow.
You need to make sure that you will have the right flooring in order to keep the place where you are going to live to be secure. Packing the snow will decrease the chances that you are also going to slip and fall. Avoid placing water over the snow unless you would like to skate over ice. As much as possible, pack the snow in order to keep yourself safe.
7. Create A Water Storage Container
Since you cannot be sure about the water that you are going to get remember that one great tip is to turn the water container upside down. This will allow the ice to pack during the night. You can turn it the right side again during daytime and melt it and you will get the water that you need throughout the day. There are even times when the water that you will pack will be enough to last for a good, long while.
8. Bring petroleum jelly.
You have to know that when it comes to protecting your skin, you need to bring enough petroleum jelly to cover the exposed areas of your skin. This will lessen the chances of your skin from getting dried up. There are also times when the exposed parts of your skin will have the tendency to freeze up. Placing petroleum will at least stop this from happening.
9. Keep your tent secure.
It is not enough that you know how to put up your tent. You need to make sure that you will keep it secure especially if the weather would already turn harsh. Make an effort to look for stakes that you are going to place on the sides of your tent. This will allow your tent to be protected even when the wind is already too high. If in case you are still searching for the right stakes, search for ones that are made out of titanium or steel.
10. Choose lithium batteries.
There are some items that you need to use that require batteries so that they can work well. Instead of the usual alkaline batteries, choose lithium batteries because you can be sure that they will still be effective even when the weather is already too cold. They can also last longer than other types of batteries.
