How To Fit Your Backpack – Should Read Before Buying

Going on a trip outdoors can be very interesting, but using a backpack that does not fit you perfectly can really spoil your outdoor activity whether you are hiking or camping. Whether you are going on a long trip or a short one, you really need to make sure that you are using a backpack that fits you perfectly. Basically, when your backpack fits well, the load will feel lighter to carry. The thing is you will inevitably experience hip pains, shoulder pains or back pains when you do not use a backpack that fits just right for you. That is why it is of great importance to be able to find a backpack that feels comfortable to carry. Below are some things that you have to check to help you get the right backpack fit.

Check the pack’s hip belt.

You must remember that most of the weight of the load must be concentrated on the hip part. When the load is heavy, your legs can strongly support any extra weight. Your shoulders are not strong enough to withstand the weight for too long. Try to check the packs’ hip belt. It should fit so well but not very tightly that you almost cannot breathe comfortably. Make sure that it is not too small or too big for your hips. The pack’s hip belt must be situated just right where the hip bones are located and not below them.

Check the length of the pack’s torso section.

The length of the pack’s torso section really matters a lot. One of the main reasons why many backpackers complain that their backpacks do not fit perfectly is because the length of the torso section of the backpacks that they use is not right at all. You must take note that the length of the torso section of the backpack should be equal to the length of your torso. You will feel awkward and uncomfortable when you carry a pack that has a long torso section if you normally have a short torso. It will feel much the same when you carry a pack that has a short torso section if you normally have a long torso.

Check the adjustments of the sternum strap.

The sternum strap needs to be fitted correctly as well. Try to see if it reaches your neck. If so, be sure to lower it since it should not touch your neck in any way. That would create too much discomfort. Make sure to tighten the strap. Try to see if your backpack’s sternum strap makes it easy for the backpack’s shoulder pads to rest on your shoulders quite well or not at all. If not, choose a backpack that has a sternum strap that can do just that.

Check how the shoulder straps fit.

The backpack’s shoulder straps are very important too. You should adjust them in such a way that they do not hurt your shoulders in any way. Be sure to pick out a backpack that has well-cushioned shoulders straps so that they do not cause any discomfort on the shoulder area. The straps should not in any way touch your neck as they can cause discomfort as well. Try to adjust the backpack’s sternum strap so that the backpack’s shoulder straps do not reach your neck as well. Check the space between your shoulders and the backpack’s shoulder straps. You should allow only a little space between them since that is the proper fit that should be observed. If not, you would not be able to carry the backpack properly, which could affect the way you move or walk.  What’s worse, you could lose balance while walking.
